Big continental

Along time ago, Africa was not far from South America. In fact, 300 million years ago all the land on earth was only one big continental, called ‘Pangaea’.

            Very slowly, pangaea separated into two parts, and the future continents began to move towards their places. But until 160 million years ago South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica were still only one huge land mass (‘Gondwannaland’). North America, Europe and Asia together made the other super continent (‘Laurasia’)

           

The Gondwannaland and Laurasia, also began to devide.

Seas started to spread between the new contonent. This was a slow process: Africa and South America only finished separating 91 million years ago.

            Some strange results of land mass movements:

There is a diamond deposit that starts in Africa, stops on the west coast, and begin again in South America.

Mountains in Norway, Scotland, Greenland and the North-east   US all belong to the same mountain chain.
